MISC:Guatemala is the northernmost and the most populated country in
Central America, (almost 1/3 of Central America's population lives
there). Famous for its Mayan background, it is the only state in North
America with a predominantly Indian population, (55% are Indian). The
climate is tropical; hot, humid in the lowlands; cooler in the
interior. The terrain is mostly mountains with narrow coastal plains
and a rolling limestone plateau. 12% of the land is arable, 40% is
forested. Guatemala has numerous volcanos in the mountains; it is
subject to frequent violent earthquakes; the Caribbean coast is subject
to hurricanes and other tropical storms. 57% of the work force is
engaged in agriculture. Metric system official but little used. Member
of UN since 1945. Member of OAS.
